I still don’t understand why none of my art teachers ever told us this.

OH MY GOD

hate posts like this. This is incredibly misleading and fails to take in the difference between additive primary colors and subtractive primary colors, or the difference between a light spectrum color wheel and a pigmented color wheel. Colors on a printer will NOT react the same way as colors in paint, if only because of all of the additives and pigments used to create paint. It also fails to take into account ideas and needs like hue, and tint.

Color theory is actually a very complex subject, but I can tell you that you should not assume you will get the same reaction out of a CMYK color wheel and a RGB color wheel when it comes to paint.

lord, thank you for that commentary. they even try to equate pthalo with cyan (pthalo blue darker but also very transparant). in painting classes, our palettes were never red, blue, yellow, white, and black. we always had a warm and cool version for each of the primaries plus the natural tones (ochre, sienna, umber) and a couple of good other colors (alizirin crimson and a good green). ink and paint dont work the same, and digital painting is different too. :/

I think a lot of art teachers get thrown into the position and rely on art teaching books to help them with the curriculum since they don’t have any training in that field.

In regards to print technology(e.g. newspaper, magazine, billboards), RGB is the primary but CMYK just lets printers produce a larger range of colors.

And there’s the whole thing with understanding subtractive and additive colors. This is all color science and for someone who just knows basic color theory, I can’t say I know anything beyond that.

But we all collectively agree that primary colors used for printing is actually different than the primary colors used in color mixing for painting; different gamuts, you know?

Every theory has its inconsistencies in practical application. I guess, it’s really up to the artist to figure if they wanna use the CMY palette or the RYB palette.

There are
some feelings
you will never
find words for;

you will learn
to name them
after the ones
who gave them
to you.
